Richard L. Hanna was born in Amarillo, Texas on October 2, 1947. He was admitted to the Bar in 1975 in Texas. His preparatory education included attending Amarillo College (A.A. 1968) and West Texas State University (B.A. 1970).
His legal education included attending Texas Tech University School of Law (J.D. 1974).
He was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta Fraternity (clerk, 1973-1974). He was involved in several honor societies, including Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Chi, Order of the Coif, Board of Editors, and Texas Tech Law Review (1973 to 1974).
